Experience as Developer?
I've been developing games and interactive applications in Flash since 2000 starting with version 4.0. My specialty is e-learning and modular xml driven frameworks. I recently finished a degree in Software Engineering and have done some work in Java and C# which has given me further insights into building sturdy and modular actionscript. I'm starting to learn actionscript all over again with AS 3.0.
Experience as Designer?
I originally received a two year degree in graphic design in 1985 before there was such a thing as Flash or multimedia development. My background gives me a common language with designers that eases communication. It also helps me construct code in ways that I know will make it easier for the designer to retain control over the look and feel of the final piece. I don't kid myself about being a designer - I'm not. I can fake it quite well, but my true passion is code and I get a huge amount of satisfaction working with real designers to help make their vision come to life.
What's the one thing Developers or Designers could do to make the other's job easier?
Designers and developers are both problem solvers and must be creative and flexible to do their work well. Communication is key. Plan for revision and try to keep content and code separate. If you're not sure how hard or easy something is to code, ask first before promising it to a client within the same deadline/budget. Revision and feature-creep would be the two major stumbling blocks on most projects I've had issues with and both can be avoided or planned for with good communication.
